All the latest cars coming out these days are packed with so much mind-blowing technology that our frame of reference for judging automotive competence has changed wildly. Let me explain. Rewind a few decades and, if your motorcar managed to complete a journey without breaking down, you were doing pretty well.

If you had fuel in the tank, fresh oil in the system, and 4 relatively comfortable seats to enable your passengers to relax, you would most certainly have a smile on your face. Whereas these days you can’t so much as take a breath without being informed of the precise coordinates of your position on Earth. Well, maybe that is taking it a bit far, but you get the point.

Our 2022 Mercedes Benz GLC43 AMG Premium Plus 4Matic is, of course, a technical work-of-art. Having come out of Affalterbach, it resonates with the quality, attention to detail, and focused development that we have come to expect from the boffins who reside there. But, critically, the GLC43 retains the feeling of simplicity. Too many cars these days have all the tech but fail to make it easy for the user to operate.

Merc has paid close attention to how its customers use their cars and how they make them feel. Without sounding too much like a brochure, Mercedes has made the GLC a joy to live with. It doesn’t feel like a computer. Although it has thousands of data points charging through its veins each second, it disguises its operation effortlessly. The deployment of Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, and Amazon Alexa in the same system has the potential to be a disaster, but the engineers at AMG had the foresight to make them work smoothly together.

Part of this hunt for simplicity comes from the fact that technology is present but is not made front and centre. The star of the show, in this case, is the engine, leather-clad cabin, and beautifully sculpted bodywork. As it should be. The 3-litre V6 powertrain produces 390hp and 520Nm torque, and, alongside trick AMG ride control suspension, a clever 9-speed gearbox, and intimidating 21-inch wheels, the GLC43 means business.

Mercedes rarely gets it wrong, and in this case they have created a real treasure. It is fun to drive, has a muscle car charm, and cossets its occupants like the best 5-star hotels. Jump aboard whilst you can.
