People want everything from a car these days. Practicality? Certainly. Even if it’s only a handful of times a year, it has got to be able to ferry family, camping paraphernalia, bikes, golf clubs…the list goes on. Performance? Let me explain. The GLB220d 4Matic AMG Line Premium Plus carries itself with a bold, striking, confident, yet calm, approachable, stylish, and friendly demeanour. Let’s start on the outside. By making clever use of flashes of chrome, piano black window surrounds, privacy glass, and diamond-turned 19-inch alloy wheels in Tantalite grey, Mercedes has created a perfectly balanced, attractive package.

The three-pointed star mounted proudly on the front grille informs every passer-by of the car’s intent, whilst the subtle Iridium silver paintwork implies quiet competence. It’s very good. But most importantly – and this is important for the brand – it turns heads without causing a stir; just the sort of vibe the designers wanted to create.

Don’t worry if you need to suddenly take the family on a trip, either. With 7 seats, a cavernous boot, and plenty of storage space, you can pack liberally knowing that you won’t be struggling for space. The tech is mind-bending as well. Boasting MBUX augmented reality for navigation, wireless charging, park assist, keyless go, 64-colour ambient lighting, Apple CarPlay, and much, much more, you’ll be able to keep the family occupied for hours. And people need all this stuff these days. A car must excite, intrigue, and satisfy the demands of a tech-obsessed generation.

It's no slouch, either. With a 2-litre diesel generating nearly 200bhp and 400Nm torque, you’ve got plenty of low-down torque to get you where you want to be in a timely fashion. Everyone is in a rush these days – having the ability to switch to SPORT and power down some country lanes, or blast across Europe, is what people demand. And they’ve got it in the GLB.

The most successful car brands are mindful of people’s behaviour (indeed, millions of pounds is spent on market research each year), but being able to translate this into an appealing automobile is another challenge entirely. Mercedes has achieved something special with the GLB. It is not imitative. It is intuitive. Oh, and it’ll get you plenty of likes on Insta…
