The previous generation Ford Ranger was extremely popular – and rightly so. It wasn’t only a tremendous off-road weapon – it satisfied the needs of farmers, builders, landscape gardeners, land agents…you name it, there’s a group that couldn’t live without its robust construction and indestructible character.

And now there’s a new one on the block. The new 2023 Ford Ranger looks far more like an F150 (the famous American Ford ‘truck’), and that’s a good thing. It looks aggressive, menacing, strong, robust, and contemporary, without being needlessly ‘retro’, or imitative. As they say in the States, it is truly a real ‘doozy’.

Being a Platinum, our Ranger is equipped with a fabulously powerful, torquey 3-litre turbocharged V6 engine, producing 240PS and accelerating from 0-60mph in 8.7 seconds. Its towing capacity is a jaw-dropping 3,500kg and it is actually longer than a Mercedes S Class, at 5,370mm, so it is certainly a proper machine.

Of course, in today’s interconnected, iPhone-centric world, technology is very important, and the Ranger more than satisfies in this department as well. Rather akin to a Tesla, the dash is dominated by a 12-inch touchscreen, from which you control the majority of the vehicle’s settings. Apple CarPlay, is, naturally, standard. Heated and cooled seats are also a welcome addition.

The Platinum gives you swathes of diamond-quilted leather; it is more like an SUV than a traditional pickup. It hasn’t forgotten where it has come from – a capacious load bed with an optional power roller shutter will please many.
