Nearly four decades ago, Volkswagen introduced the GTI and almost single-handedly invented what we now call the hot hatch. With power in abundance, sporty handling and all-wheel drive stability, the 2019 Volkswagen Golf R is a fitting modern-day interpretation of that legacy, a car that will boost your heart rate while still offering a comfortable interior and inherent hatchback versatility. Thanks to reformed WLTP regulations, the R’s all-to-familiar EA888 2-Litre TSI engine has been through a subtle de-tuned which has pegged back its power to 296BHP from its prior 306BHP figure. A renowned distinctive quality of the Golf R is the full utilisation of its performance, if the front tyres slip, the 4MOTION all-wheel-drive system can send virtually all the engine’s power to the rear end in fraction of second. Before the manual version was discontinued, it did 0-62mph in a mere 5.1 seconds, while the predominant DSG model boasts launch control and trims that timing down to 4.7 seconds with its maximum torque of 400Nm. The engine sounds the part too, at idle there’s a bassy rumble that is dominant by not intrusive, while the unit takes on a hard-edged growl and the revs rise. Inside the cabin, there’s a blend of the sporty hatchback feel with the swish ambience of an upmarket executive car. There’s the standard Golf dash complemented by carbon-look decorative trims and sports seats, while the classy and sporty multifunctional steering wheel and switchgear make everything you touch live up to the £30k+ price tag.
