When the Audi RS2 Avant arrived in 1994, it caused quite a stir. Fettled by the boffins at Porsche, it benefitted from bespoke suspension, a highly-tuned 2.2-litre 5-cylinder engine, and an out-of-this-world braking system. It took the car world by storm, becoming an icon in the process. The model was so successful, in fact, that Audi decided to commemorate its first ‘RS model’ by creating a series of ‘Nogaro Edition’ versions of some of its contemporary vehicles.

One of those special vehicles arrived in 2014; the RS4 Avant Nogaro Edition was offered in very limited numbers – only 25 examples were produced for the UK market – and they all provided a charismatic driving experience and striking looks.

Our late 2014 example has only covered 63,700 miles from new, benefits from a Full Service History, and comes with the carbon fibre design package for the engine bay, wind deflectors, and an individual mode for the Audi Drive Select. It’s certainly a one-off. And at the time of writing our example is the only one currently available for sale.

You might be asking yourself what is so great about this Nogaro Edition. Apart from the fact that it is limited, you’d be right in wondering what really separates it from a run-of-the-mill RS4 (if there is even such a thing). Look beneath the surface, however, and the details all come together to craft a truly beguiling automobile.

The vibrant pearl-effect Nogaro paintwork is named after a track in South-West France, conjuring up images of pre-war Bugatti’s fighting wheel-to-wheel. The carbon fibre interior trim has a blue weave running through it, the sports seats invite you in with their vibrant Nogaro Blue softness, whilst gloss black styling to the front grille, red brake callipers, an RS sports exhaust system, and a top speed increase to 174mph make it a truly unique Avant.

Porsche may not have got involved this time round, but it is impossible to deny the RS4 Nogaro is a beautifully compelling package. With a 4.2-litre naturally-aspirated V8, which in Dynamic mode generates a wonderful cacophony of gunfire when you downshift, it gives the driver a genuinely engaging driving experience. In a world where the obvious route is hybridisation or turbocharging, it is refreshing to experience a proper free-flowing engine. A definite future classic.
